“It’s a disaster, everything you could have imagined has come true out of good luck.” Massimo Morattispeaking to TMW, he commented on Italy’s defeat in Bosnia as follows: “We have a national team that is not up to its duties. If Gattuso wants to stay, certainly, but to do what? To rebuild we need something much more profound, careful, studied.”
Does the choice whether to resign or not depend on Gattuso?
“Yes, but he’s already taken on a responsibility that’s bigger than him. Maybe taking it on again isn’t worth it. Everyone who’s there must think that they’ve taken on responsibilities that are bigger than them, from Gravina on down. When someone doesn’t make it, they can’t make it. You’ve made an attempt, you bet everything on it: if it goes wrong, it goes wrong. If they put themselves in the shoes of the people who feel bad about it, it takes them a second to understand that they have to go away.”
Were you saddened by what happened to Bastoni?
“It’s a moment where he has to let himself be blessed, with everything that happens to him.”
“Well, the long faces with which they prepared spoke volumes. They spoke of a joyful atmosphere, but you couldn’t see it. The national team touches everyone, it’s no wonder or offended if people ask to step aside, if one hasn’t been up to what he had to do. I think we need to seriously start thinking about something lasting, and at the same time also consider doing something more serious to help young people grow. Everyone says it and no one does it.”
