Long-time second division professional Marc Lorenz is facing serious allegations. He has to answer in court.
The public prosecutor’s office Muenster has brought charges against former second division professional Marc Lorenz. The 37-year-old is said to have collected more than 54,000 euros in ten fundraising campaigns between 2022 and 2025 and kept it for himself. Lorenz, through his defense attorney, denies having committed a crime.
The authorities assume that Lorenz did not intend to pass on the funds from the start. He is said to have used his local fame as a footballer to collect donations. Only when irregularities were discovered did he pay out the money – according to the public prosecutor’s office, possibly only out of concern for his contract. The entire amount has now been paid.
Lorenz spoke out on social media last August after Preußen Münster fired him. He explained that he had settled the funds too late, but had already paid the outstanding amount at the time of termination. He cited mental illness as the reason. He was so burdened by this that he was “completely unmotivated and unable to take necessary actions in time.” He would never intentionally embezzle donations for a good cause.
At the beginning of March, the club and Lorenz reached an agreement on labor law proceedings, according to a statement on the Preußen Münster homepage. Both parties welcomed the agreement without providing further details. Lorenz said in his statement: “I have made mistakes and disappointed people, which I deeply regret.” A dpa request to his lawyer initially remained unanswered. The presumption of innocence applies until the verdict is announced.
