KIEV (dpa-AFX) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj discussed the peace process for his country with US President Donald Trump’s negotiators. Zelenskyj wrote on Platform NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also took part in the video link.
“Ukraine appreciates every effort by America to create a worthy peace,” Zelensky wrote in Kiev. It was agreed that the teams would continue to work on a document on US security guarantees for Ukraine in the coming days. “This is what can pave the way to a reliable end to the war.”
The Ukrainian president did not give any details. Most recently, he reported on pressure from the USA that Ukraine should – as demanded by Russia – vacate its last positions in the Donbass industrial region in order to achieve peace. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov demanded in Moscow that Zelenskyj should make a decision on this today (Wednesday).
The Ukrainian head of state renewed his proposal for a ceasefire over Easter, as the presidential office in Kiev announced. This could be the signal “that diplomacy can be successful.” Moscow’s position is that there can only be a ceasefire after all conflict issues have been resolved.
Zelenskyj: Ukraine needs to know how partners react
Zelensky emphasized the importance of reliable security guarantees for Ukraine. “So that the Ukrainians clearly understand how the partners will respond in the event of renewed Russian aggression and what is actually intended to deter Russia from aggression,” he wrote on X. There were initially no comments from the US side about the conversation.
Before the switch, Zelenskyj had coordinated with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr. Russia has been trying to subdue its neighboring country with a large-scale invasion for more than four years. Because of the Iran war, Trump’s administration has recently paid less attention to Ukraine./fko/DP/he
