Holstein Kiel is setting an important example for the future and retaining young talent Lio Rothenhagen for the long term. The 19-year-old goalkeeper’s new working paper runs until 2029. The U20 national goalkeeper was in the professional squad once this season and is guarding the goal for the second team in the Schleswig-Holstein Oberliga.
“We are very pleased that we were able to show Lio a perspective at Holstein and enter into a long-term collaboration with him. He is an absolute top talent in his year. He has been training regularly with our professional team since the summer of 2024 and is also gaining match practice in the U23. He not only demonstrated his great potential with us, but was also able to attract international attention with the German U20 national team,” said sports director Olaf Rebbe, commenting on the extension.
Rothenhagen, who moved to the KSV’s U13 team in 2019, said: “For me, from a young age, there was only Holstein Kiel. I am very grateful to the club for the excellent training and trust that has been placed in me over the years. My goal is to constantly develop and be a reliable support for our team in the future. That’s why it means a lot to me to continue my path with my hometown club in the coming years and to play in the Holstein Stadium at some point may.”
