Catherine Keyl is hardly asked for anything anymore. MAX boss Jan Slagter hates her and Johan Derksen thinks she is too old for VI, so we only see her with Harry Mens. How is she?

© SBS

79-year-old Catherine Keyl was once a very big TV star, but nowadays she is rarely used. She still has a column in De Telegraaf, but in terms of TV venues she has to make do with the Harry Mens talk show Business Class. And that is not exactly the most prestigious program on Dutch television.

In the picture

Catherine has now come to terms with the situation, she confides to the Weekend. “I actually find it nice and quiet and that’s nice. Why? Because being constantly in the picture also comes with all kinds of limitations.”

She continues: “People often think that it is great to be a famous Dutch person, but being recognized and addressed everywhere really does have its disadvantages. Most people do not realize what fame actually means. To be honest, I never really realized that myself.”

Downton Abbey

Now Catherine lives as an ordinary woman of almost eighty years old. “I love being able to take it easy now. I finally get around to things that I otherwise never had time for. Like Downton Abbey, I have finally been able to watch that series. Great, so good! Everything just fits.”

Does she not want to add anything more to her resume? “Maybe I’m slowly getting to the point where I can say: I’ve done so much now, I really can’t think of it anymore.’ And that’s fine.”
