German World Cup opponents Curaçao also lost their second game under former Schalke coach Fred Rutten.
The national soccer team from the Caribbean island suffered a 1:5 (0:1) defeat in the test against Australia in Melbourne. Curaçao showed a decent performance for a long time and got an equalizer through Ar’jany Martha (50th minute).
As the game progressed, the hosts made better and better use of their technical and physical advantages. The Australian goals were scored by Awer Mabil (23rd), Alessandro Circati (67th), Jordan Bos (71st) and Nestory Irankunda (80th/84th).
Rutten as successor to Advocaat
Former Schalke player Rutten took over the coaching position from his Dutch compatriot Dick Advocaat in February. The 78-year-old had withdrawn from the position because of his daughter’s illness.
In Rutten’s debut, Curaçao lost 2-0 to China last week. Curacao is the German team’s opening opponent at the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico on June 14th. The World Cup debutants’ other opponents in Group E are Ecuador (June 20) and Ivory Coast (June 25).
