C‘it is an age, between 18 and 28, which often coincides with a phase of life in which one tries to understand “what to do when they grow up” or how to use the time between one university exam and another, to weigh less on their parents’ wallets. It is precisely at this moment that an opportunity arises to be seized upon: the universal civil service. It’s not about the alternative to the old military and it’s not even about free volunteering done in your free time. It is a real pact between those who offer some of their time for a useful cause and those, the State, who give the tools, the money and a fast track to work. This opportunity, however, expires on April 8th at 2pmso you have to hurry a little.
Universal civil service 2026: a real contract, not a simple job
To understand what exactly the Civil Service is, you have to forget the idea of an “internship” where you photocopy papers or bring coffee. Doing civil service means signing a contract with the Department for Youth Policies. The commitment is approximately 25 hours a week, spread over 5 or 6 days. It is the perfect size: it allows you to have a “work” routine, but leaves enough time to study, play sports or go out with friends. You can choose from thousands of projects: there are those who help the elderly, those who deal with environmental educationthose who work in museums or those who support civil protection. It lasts between 8 and 12 months and, eventuallywhat remains in your hand is not just a memory, but a certificate from the Presidency of the Council of Ministers which forms a curriculum.
The wallet thanks: the monthly check
Let’s talk about numbers, however, because enthusiasm is nice, but economic independence is even better. Every month you receive a check for 519.47 euros. Even if they may seem “insignificant” considering a full salary, they are instead excellent as reimbursement for expenses, also because they are totally tax-free. Furthermore, this money does not accumulate with the family’s income: translated, the parents’ ISEE does not go up and therefore you will not lose any scholarships or benefits.

The advantages of experience abroad
Not only that: if you also wanted a change of scenery, there are around 1,500 places abroad. In that case the offer becomes almost a solidarity working holiday: in addition to the basic 500 euros, you also receive a daily allowance, between 13 and 15 euros, and the organization pays for food, accommodation and return travel. An incredible way to see the world without spending a fortune and the perfect opportunity to live a year as a “citizen of the world” truly integrating into a local culture, with the security of having your back covered and the possibility of returning to Italy once during the service, always all paid for.
The smart move for public competitions
There is a detail that many underestimate, but which is perhaps the most concrete advantage of all: the reservation of 15% of places in public competitions. It works like this: if tomorrow you decide to participate in a competition to work in a municipality, in a ministry or in a public body, you need to know that, by law, 15% of the places advertised are “booked” for those who have done civil service. A sort of fast track. Obviously it doesn’t mean that you win without studying, but that you compete with much less competition. It’s a long-term investment that could save your career in a few years.
How to participate without going crazy with bureaucracy
As anticipated, the time to apply is short: the deadline is 2pm on 8 April 2026. The application can only be done online, so no files or paperwork. Two fundamental things are needed: the Spid or the Cie, the electronic identity card. Without these you cannot enter Dol portal, online application. The advice is to go to the site scelgoilserviziocivile.gov.itlook at the projects in your city or abroad and read carefully what they ask you to do. You can choose only one projectso it’s better to focus on the one that inspires the most. Once selected, you will start working between September and October.
What is actually done: concrete projects
However, talking about “sectors” for projects risks making everything abstract. It is more worth looking at specific projects, which give a concrete idea of what it means to participate. There Italian Caritasfor example, one of the large titular bodies, offers the so-called White Helmets for projects abroad: experiences in Ecuador and Guatemala on social agriculture and the promotion of the rights of rural communities, in the Philippines for the inclusion of ethnic minorities, in Senegal and Sierra Leone for the support of vulnerable migrants and many others. In 2026 too ActionAid, with the support of Associazione Mosaico, participates in the Universal Civil Service tender selecting 6 young resources who will have the opportunity to work for 12 monthsfrom September 2026, to support various organizational areas, from that of activism regarding educational inequalities to that of national and territorial campaigning.
If you fight for the environment
On the environmental front, there are projects dedicated to the protection of parks and nature reserves, wildlife monitoring, environmental education in schools and urban redevelopment. In the Lodi areafor example, there is a project called “Lodigiano good land” which unites agriculture, territory and local community. In Abruzzo, the Cooperative League proposes “An ecological corridor”in which nature and landscape are treated as collective assets to be protected and enhanced.
The value of the social
AVISthe Italian Blood Volunteers Association, for its part, participates with almost 500 places distributed throughout the country. The Municipality of Turin presented 48 projects for a total of 492 placeswhich range from support to women in difficulty and unaccompanied foreign minors, to support in libraries, up to the valorisation of university museum heritage. They are very different contexts, but all have one thing in common: you find yourself doing something that has a real effect on people.
If you want to change the world
If, again, you want to cultivate another idea of the world, good, clean and just, you also have the opportunity to enter into projects proposed by Slow Food. Starting from September 2026, a group of 4 people between girls and boys will have the opportunity to get involved thanks to the activities of this movement which has become an international organization. A year of training, research, awareness and education; a year of training activities and concrete actions to support good, clean and fair agricultural and food policies. A year in the Slow Food Italia offices, among the education, biodiversity and communication offices. The application must be submitted exclusively via the DOL e platform To apply you must choose the “Sustainable Turnaround 2026” project.
A final novelty is the National Youth Card
Finally, an interesting innovation which has nothing to do with the Civil Service, but which can be useful to accompany, it is the national youth card, a digital card that gives discounts on trains, cinemas, gyms and online purchases up to the age of 35. While asking the question, there is a button that allows you to activate it for free. It’s a little “bonus” that never hurts. In short, the civil service is that train that only passes once. Therefore, if you are of the right age and willing to get involved, It’s worth clicking “send” before the time runs out.
