According to a survey, many people in Germany are holding back on Easter shopping. 40 percent want to spend less on Easter items in supermarkets and discounters than last year. This emerges from a representative survey by the opinion research company YouGov.

52 percent say they want to shop the same amount, 6 percent plan to spend more. According to YouGov, women are particularly cautious. 46 percent want to spend less than last year; for men the proportion is 34 percent.

YouGov market researcher Silvia Rothmann-Falk gives several reasons for this. “We are currently noticing that the Easter business in food retail is strongly influenced by price consciousness.” In addition to increased prices, growing health awareness among families is also contributing to consumers buying more selectively or foregoing altogether. YouGov surveyed more than 2,000 people aged 18 and over.

Retail expects sales of 2.1 billion euros

Retailers are expecting a 6.5 percent drop in sales in this year’s Easter business compared to the previous year. The German Trade Association (HDE) expects revenue of around 2.1 billion euros.
