- Berlin is not necessarily dominant, but efficient
Defending champions Eisbären Berlin took the lead for the first time in the playoff quarter-final series against the Straubing Tigers. The Berliners won 4-2 (2-1, 2-1, 0-0) in Bavaria on Sunday afternoon and are leading 2-1 in the best-of-seven series. The Berliners didn’t necessarily present themselves as superior, but they were callous and efficient.
The next game will take place in the capital again on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.).
Noebels scores in his 100th playoff game
After the Berliners in The first duel in Straubing on Tuesday was 3-0 down after just two minutesthis time they started with concentration and had their first opportunities early on. Lester Lancaster came undisturbed through the neutral zone into the opponent’s third, shot and the puck landed – presumably slightly deflected by Straubing’s Nicolas Beaudin – into the goal to make it 1-0 (4th). For Lancaster it was the first playoff goal in the DEL.
But the lead didn’t last long. After a shot at Berlin goalkeeper Jonas Stettmer, things became confusing in front of the goal. Mike Connolly was quickest and poked the puck over the line to make it 1-1 (7′). But coach Serge Aubin’s team didn’t let this unsettle them and continued to apply pressure – and scored the next goal. Once again it was Lancaster who pulled away from the blue line. Marcel Noebels deflected the target decisively and was able to celebrate a goal in his 100th playoff game (11th). After a powerful power play, Lancaster even hit the post again, but the lead initially remained 2-1.
Quick compensation when outnumbered
At the start of the second third, defender Jonas Müller had to go to the penalty box early, and Straubing used the majority to equalize again. After Stettmer was able to parry Marcel Brandt’s first shot, the striker put the puck in the goal on his second attempt (23′).
Straubing was clearly the better team after the break, but the Eisbären gradually created their opportunities and, above all, presented themselves effectively. Eric Hördler emerged victorious with the disc from a duel on the boards, looked for the finish and Lean Bergmann deflected it to give the Berliners their third lead – 3:2 (27th). This time the defending champions quickly extended their lead – Ty Ronning completed a counterattack to make it 4-2 (29th).
No goals in the final third
Straubing continued to press on goal in the final third and benefited, among other things, from several penalty times for the Eisbären. But the hosts missed their chances or failed because of the attentive Stettmer. This meant the Eisbären won 4-2.
