The fact that there are more women in the municipal council shows that a clear step forward has been taken, says the women’s network. “In places where women are visible and eligible, they are also elected. In fact, analysis shows that many elected women not only ended up in a higher position than their original list position, but a significant number also entered the council through preferential votes.”
Anita van der Noord of the Drenthe Political Women’s Network is happy with the development. According to her, it is a “clear signal” from the voter. “It proves that when women are given the opportunity, they take it and the voters fully support them,” she says.
