KLM is significantly shortening the training for aircraft mechanics: from more than two years to nine months. This is possible because a written-off Boeing 737 has been converted into a training aircraft, on which students can gain practical experience faster and more independently. The company is thus responding to the shortage of well-trained technicians. The device will be put into use in three months.

The aircraft, which made its last flight on March 28, was driven into Hangar 14 in the Technical Area East, where KLM Engineering & Maintenance (E&M), KLM’s maintenance department, is located with a visible show of force. MBO students, trainers and a group of media were present.

Trained faster

“With this plane we shorten the training time somewhatbecause we can then tell you which tasks you need to do,” says program manager Stefanie Boers, who set up the project. Students learn on the device how to change a wheel, check fuel hatches and replace cockpit gauges.

According to a trainer, the training aircraft offers great advantages. Because the device is no longer used in daily operations, students can practice without interruption and gain experience more quickly.

One of the students who experiences it up close is Fabio Kortekaas. He is about to complete his training and clearly sees the added value of the training aircraft. While pointing out different parts, he explains what he is working on.

“You have all kinds of grease nipples here, here is the chemical damper, the torsion link, tire change,” says the aspiring aircraft mechanic.

Work at your own pace

On the training aircraft, technicians in training can practice all maintenance work without being dependent on it maintenance moments on still flying aircraft.

Previously, this regularly caused waiting time, which delayed the learning process. With the new device, students can work at their own pace.

The first groups will start with practical lessons in June 2026. KLM E&M is thus responding to the growing demand for aircraft technicians, which will increase further in the coming years due to, among other things, retirements. The company has now hired more than a thousand new technicians who will soon be able to start via the new training course.
