Motorists are required to give way when pedestrians are about to cross at a zebra crossing. It is a rule that was introduced exactly thirty years ago, but nine in ten pedestrians indicate that cars regularly do not stop, new research shows. However, the fines are not minor. “As a pedestrian, make eye contact with the motorist before you cross,” recommends Stef Willems of Vias traffic institute.
