Mathys Tel hoped his big breakthrough would come from his move from FC Bayern to Tottenham Hotspur, but things turned out differently than expected. Under Thomas Frank, the 20-year-old offensive player had to be content with the joker role. Now he is getting more playing time under successor Igor Tudor, but the North Londoners are having a disaster season. Recently there were rumors about contact with Borussia Dortmund, which Tel’s advisor Gadiri Camara denied to the online portal “Absolut Bayern”.

“I don’t know if Dortmund really wants Mathys, but to be honest, a return to Bayern is the only way Mathys can come back to Germany. He can’t play for another club in the Bundesliga. He loves FC Bayern,” Camara explained when asked. At BVB, the position in the center of attack could become vacant in the summer because Serhou Guirassy (30) is considered a candidate for departure.

Tel came to FC Bayern from Stade Rennes in the summer of 2022 for 20 million euros – with Jude Bellingham (2020; for 30.15 million to BVB) and Jadon Sancho (2017; for 20.59 million to BVB) more money was only paid twice for a minor in the Bundesliga. The Frenchman played 83 games for the record champions, in which he scored 16 goals and prepared seven more. Tel didn’t go beyond the joker role for Munich, even though he was involved in a goal every 107 minutes. He repeatedly emphasized what FC Bayern would mean to him before he was loaned to Tottenham for six months in February 2025 with the prospect of more match practice.

Premier League: Tel with Tottenham in free fall

The Londoners paid FC Bayern 10 million euros for the six-month loan, and the Europa League winners then signed him permanently for 35 million euros. In the current Premier League season he appeared in 24 games, nine of which were in the starting line-up. He scored three goals. Most recently, the criticized coach Tudor let him start three times after he had a difficult time under Frank. In January, according to the Guardian, he even asked for his release. After his move, his market value initially climbed from 30 million to 40 million euros, but after three devaluations it is now at 25 million euros.

Tottenham have not won in 13 Premier League games and are in free fall. With just 30 points after 31 matchdays, the club is in the middle of a relegation battle – the lead over West Ham United, who are in a relegation zone, is just one point (in the table). No team is worse in the Premier League form table. A fall to the Championship is likely to result in numerous players – including Tel – leaving the club.
