Broadcast at ten minutes to three UK time BBC Radio Merseyside From the studio in Liverpool, about 500 meters from the Cavern Club, the new single by Paul McCartney, “Days We Left Behind”, is a world exclusive. Of course, the residents of his hometown should be the first to hear this song. After all, it is a reminiscence of his childhood in the city on the Mersey. “Looking back at white and black/ Reminders of my past,” sings McCartney, recalling the “boys of dungeon lane along the Mersey shore.” They were already featured in his never officially released song “In Liverpool” from the late 80s and also give the title to his first new album since “McCartney 3” from 2020. “The Boys Of Dungeon Lane” will be released on May 29th.
Memories of Liverpool
“For me, this is an album full of memories,” says McCartney. “The album title, ‘The Boys of Dungeon Lane’, comes from the lyrics of that song. I was thinking about exactly that, about the days I’ve left behind, and I often wonder if I’m just writing about the past. But then I think: How can you write about anything else? It’s just a lot of memories of Liverpool. There’s a bit in the middle of the song about John and Forthlin Road, the street I used to live on. Dungeon Lane is nearby. I used to live in a place called Speke, which is pretty working class. We barely had anything. But that didn’t matter because all the people were great and you didn’t realize you didn’t have much.”
“Days We Left Behind” is a big nostalgic ballad in the tradition of “Penny Lane” and “Early Days.” It was produced by Andrew Watt with a pinch of autotune.
