Kylian Mbappé had to take a week-long break due to knee pain. A misunderstanding probably delayed his recovery. Now the Frenchman speaks out.
Football superstar Kylian Mbappé has rejected reports of a medical error at Real Madrid. “The information that the wrong knee was examined is not true,” said the Frenchman at a national team press conference before the friendly against Brazil.
Spanish and French media had previously reported that doctors from the Spanish first division club were said to have examined the pain-suffering striker on the wrong knee in December. The newspaper “El País” and the trade journal “Marca” wrote that they had confirmed the revelation by the French broadcaster “RMC Sport” beyond any doubt.
The French journalist Daniel Riolo explained in the “RMC” program “After Foot” that the doctors at Real Madrid had simply made a mistake in the knee and therefore made a wrong diagnosis. “An MRI scan was performed on his right leg, although he had pain on his left leg,” it said. This “really upset” the captain of the Équipe Tricolore when he found out about it.
But Mbappé also said that he might be partly to blame for the false allegations. “Because if you don’t communicate what you’re missing and what’s important, then that leaves the door open for interpretation and everyone tries to fill in the gaps,” said the 27-year-old.
Mbappé was injured in the home game against Celta Vigo (0-2) on December 7th. After a long break, he came on as a substitute in the away win at Manchester City on March 17th and on Sunday against Atlético Madrid – without any complaints. He is considered ready for France’s World Cup friendly matches against Brazil on Thursday and against Colombia on Sunday. Mbappé explained: “I’m very happy that I’m here, that I’m available and completely fit. I’m ready for action and will be from the start if I’m needed.”
