When Christoph Liedtke, the drummer of the band Friend`tett, plays the first notes, the general murmur dies down until only the voice of singer Kristina Love can be heard through the high hall. Don’t Start Now by Dua Lipa is the opening song. Although this is a kind of separation anthem, the core can also be applied to life itself: new phases of life, one’s own strengths and one’s own independence must be celebrated.
At the end of this winter semester, a total of 379 graduates from a total of four departments at TH Lübeck were happy about their successfully completed phase of life. 76 young people received their degrees in the Department of Applied Natural Sciences, 140 bachelor’s and master’s students in the Department of Civil Engineering, 75 graduates in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and 88 graduates are starting a new phase of life with a certificate from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Economics.
The Tower of Babel as an image of cooperation
Well, let us build a city and a tower whose top reaches to the sky
Pastor Lilly Schaack chooses the image of the Tower of Babel in her speech. An endeavor that symbolizes people’s quest to glorify themselves and place themselves above God. But also the story of a large construction project: There are people with a vision. Teamwork, organization, materials, planning. I imagine: It was calculated and drawn, rejected and improved. Project plans, deadlines, discussions.
All things that graduates of TH Lübeck should also be aware of.
But if you read the story carefully, you will notice that the construction failed not because of skills, but because of communication. Studying is not a tower that you build alone
said Schaack, it is always a community project.
Above all, she gave the graduates one message: Stay tuned. Stay curious about other people’s perspectives. The best ideas rarely arise alone.
Bachelor students come back to TH Lübeck
Students Albiona Pacolli, Gözde Karaoglu and Elena Sahakyan remembered some of such challenging projects very well. The three young women went home on Saturday with their bachelor’s degrees in architecture. What was special about her studies was always the proximity to practice, for example in the form of environmental models: When your own design fits into an overall picture
said Gözde Karaoglu, it was always something special.
The course is varied, practical and offers you direct access to the world of work. All three already worked in architectural offices during their studies and can now implement what they learned during their time at TH Lübeck full-time. However, it is not a long farewell, all three are aiming for their master’s degree and want to return for the winter semester.
I’m happy to see you all here and wonder if you can believe it yourself yet
began Dr. Muriel Helbig, President of TH Lübeck, with her words to the graduates. But instead of talking about the uncertainties of the world and challenges in the new phase of life, she brought everyone in the room to the present, to exactly this one moment: Maybe today it would just be nice to take a breather for a moment.
Being in the here and now and simply listening: Congratulations, you did really well.
Graduating from TH Lübeck stands for commitment and perseverance
And Helbig also talks again about what it takes to complete your studies: This certificate is much more than a degree. It represents years of your commitment and perseverance, but also support from your families and friends. Studying like this is demanding – you have mastered it and can rightly be proud of yourself!
And added: I hope that the knowledge you have acquired from us will accompany you well on your professional path, that you will find a job that you enjoy and with which you can make a positive contribution to our society.
Mayor Henning Schumann once again shows the opportunities and possibilities for the graduates that are now waiting for them: As mayor, I am proud to live in a city that is rich in history and culture – and at the same time in innovative strength, scientific excellence and economic dynamism. The Lübeck University of Technology is a pillar of this strength and shapes Lübeck as a science and business location far beyond the region. The graduates of Lübeck Technical University are ideally equipped to help solve the existing challenges of our time. Whether in Lübeck, in Europe or worldwide.
After graduation, a new chapter begins
Nights with lots of coffee and little sleep
something that probably not only Tobias Haeger, a master’s graduate in environmental science and management, knew. And the joy when someone suddenly said that he or she had the solution. It wasn’t until he was studying at the TH Lübeck that he realized: How big the world of open questions is.
And that there is no big conspiracy behind many things, but a system, and systems can be learned to understand. Studying, and especially studying at the TH Lübeck, changes the way you look at the world, he said: You suddenly see systems everywhere
and the networks hidden behind it. They are now all starting a new chapter in their lives, not with all the answers, but with pretty good questions
Haeger concludes his speech.
With Your simply the best Singer Kristina Love once again emphasizes the speeches at this celebration. You are simply the best. Better than all the rest
says Tina Turner’s text. A wonderful conclusion and suitable words to send the graduates into their future.
