Chuck Norris is dead. The martial artist, who parlayed his career in karate into a decades-long presence as one of the defining figures of action cinema, was 86 years old.
“It is with great sadness that our family shares the unexpected passing of our beloved Chuck Norris yesterday morning,” said a statement posted on Instagram. “We do not want to make the details public, but we ask that you know that he was with his family and was able to leave quietly.”
The statement describes him as more than just a public figure: “For many, he was a martial artist, actor and epitome of strength. For us, he was a caring husband, father and grandfather, a close brother and the center of our family.”
Norris died in Hawaii on Thursday, a few days after his 86th birthday. He was reportedly previously treated at hospital for a medical emergency but was said to be in stable condition.
