As court documents have now become known, US filmmaker David Lynch, who died in January 2025, left behind extensive assets, most of which benefit his four children. In addition, several close companions have received financial donations.
Twin Peaks, film rights and company shares
Lynch, who died of cardiac arrest on January 16, 2025 – weakened by chronic lung disease – had already drawn up his will in 1994 and was last updated in May 2023. The administrator of the estate is his long-time confidant Sabrina Sutherland.
The central assets include legal interests in productions relating to the cult series “Twin Peaks”, company shares and the copyrights to Lynch’s film and artistic work. The latter in particular is likely to be of considerable value in the long term, as Lynch is considered one of the most influential auteur filmmakers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
The director, who made film history with works like “Eraserhead,” “Blue Velvet” and “Mulholland Drive,” combined surreal imagery with an often dark examination of the American psyche in his oeuvre. Lynch also left his mark on the music scene – for example through his own albums and collaborations that showed his affinity for experimental soundscapes.
Four children as primary beneficiaries
According to the documents, larger parts of the estate go to his children Jennifer, Austin, Riley and Lula. The trust also plans to cover the costs of education and medical care for the beneficiaries.
In addition, Lynch received several personal donations: $100,000 went to his long-time producing partner Alfredo Ponce, while his brother John Lynch, his sister Martha Levacy and his former wife Mary Fisk each received $25,000.

The director’s property also included several properties in Los Angeles, including a lavish ten-bedroom mansion and two other properties in the same area.
In addition to the material values, Lynch’s artistic legacy remains – a work between cinema, television, music and visual art that resonates to this day.
