Ed Sheeran and Benny Blanco showed they still have it in them to make music together.
The British singer, known for “Shape Of You,” was a guest on the “Friendskeepscrets” podcast. The project is hosted by none other than Benny Blanco, David Burd – aka rapper Lil Dicky – and Kristin Batalucco.
With their new project, the three set themselves the task of processing their friendship in a podcast and creating insights into their normal meetings outside of interviews, premieres and official media events. Instead of being recorded in a studio, the podcast is recorded in Burd and Batalucco’s house and normal interactions between the friends are captured using hidden cameras. The whole thing looks more like a reality show with sitcom elements than a planned recording.
Selena Gomez and Ed Sheeran as first guests
The first visitor to the podcast was actress and singer Selena Gomez, as well as Blanco’s wife. For the third episode, the three hosts brought another star into their show: Ed Sheeran.
Blanco and Sheeran have worked together for much of their careers. Benny Blanco was involved as a producer and songwriter on many of Sheeran’s successful projects, including the album “Divide”. The two developed this on tour for two years. Apparently they hardly visited a real studio – which now seems realistic in view of the songwriting skills the two demonstrated in the “Friendskeepscrets” show, named after Benny Blanco’s album.
A catchy hit in 20 minutes
A small jam session turned into a catchy hit. The well-rehearsed duo managed to write and record a song in just 20 minutes. The dynamic between the two is still there despite a long break from working together. While Blanco whipped up a beat, Sheeran began humming a tune. With ideas from Kristin Batalucco and David Burd, a song about friendship in the thirties was created – fascinatingly quick and uncomplicated, written, recorded and mixed in just 20 minutes. The track can currently only be heard in the podcast recording. Of course, fans hope that it will soon be available on streaming platforms.
Fans celebrate shared creativity
The listeners were surprised at how effortless the two made the process seem: “The live creation of the song was the coolest thing I’ve seen in ages. I’ll be watching this episode again and again in the near future.” Another fan summed up his excitement: “The fact that Ed just has a blast with Benny and then disappears like a mysterious magician is the coolest thing you can ever experience.”
There is no question that the two of them have exceptional talent. Blanco was also able to once again consolidate his seriousness as a songwriter and producer – after he had previously been called unprofessional because he sat with dirty feet during a podcast recording with Selena Gomez. After all, he has written and produced tracks not only with Sheeran, but also with Rihanna, Kesha, Justin Bieber, Maroon 5 and many other artists.
