Norway’s Hovi reported on Tuesday that Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s health has deteriorated again. Mette-Marit suffers from pulmonary fibrosis.

It was later clarified that Mette-Marit suffers from pulmonary fibrosis. It is an incurable disease in which the lung tissue becomes scarred or fibrotic. The disease weakens the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide and shows symptoms such as a dry cough, shortness of breath and fatigue.

Condition varies

Due to her illness, Mette-Marit has appeared less and less in public. He has represented in official positions within the limits of his health, sometimes more actively, sometimes less.

According to Haakon, Mette-Marit, among other things, suffocates easily because of her illness, but at least at that time the illness could not otherwise be detected from the outside.

For the worse

In October 2024, Mette-Marit started taking medication for her illness again. Medication itself can also cause side effects that affect work ability. At the same time, the crown princess went on a short sick leave.

During the last year, Mette-Marit’s health has taken a turn for the worse.

– The Crown Princess has daily symptoms that affect her ability to perform her duties. The Crown Princess needs more rest and her schedule may change faster than before, Hovi announced in March 2025.

In September, it was announced that the crown princess will undergo a month-long pulmonary rehabilitation. Earlier in the same month, Mette-Marit had to cancel her representative trip to the United States on the recommendation of doctors.

In December, serious information came again. Hovi announced that a lung transplant is being planned for Mette-Marit. The examinations carried out during the autumn had shown that the health of the crown princess had clearly deteriorated.
