Actor and model Sam Asghari arrived at the 98th Academy Awards on Sunday.
NBC News website asked Asghar about his ex-spouse, pop star Britney Spears. Spears was arrested in early March on suspicion of drunk driving and driving under the influence of drugs.
Asghari said at the gala that he felt “the greatest possible love and respect” for his ex-wife. Asghari, who is of Iranian background, said she approaches the situation with a certain sensitivity, as she comes from a place where women have been oppressed.
– And in my own way — I’m by no means comparing it to Iranian women who are kicked in the face, tortured and dying — but in a certain way, seeing something like this happen in America made me more sensitive to this situation, Asghari commented to the news site.
Asghari also said he believes Spears can overcome her recent struggles.
– I’m really not worried about someone who is a strong woman. He’s been through hell and back. She is a strong woman. He is an artist and an icon, Asghari continued.
– He just needs privacy, Asghari said at the end.

Britney Spears and Sam Asghari got married in the summer of 2022. This happened after Spears left her father’s guardianship in 2021. Spears was under her father’s guardianship for as many as 13 years. Her father controlled Spears’ finances and private life. In August 2023, Asghari filed for divorce alone just 14 months after the marriage. He said the reason was disagreements.
