The journalist and columnist for Futurock radio, Lucas Roman, He reported having been the victim of an attack in the middle of a public street when he was leaving work. The episode occurred on Monday afternoon in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Almagro, on the corner of Medrano and Guardia Vieja, and was reported by the communicator himself during a radio interview on the same station, where he described how he was attacked without warning by a man who then escaped.
According to the journalist’s reconstruction, the attack occurred a few minutes after the end of the program in which he participated at the station. At that moment he was walking towards the corner to leave when a stranger approached and hit him directly in the face. As a result, he suffered injuries to his eye and ear area. “My eye is pretty bad and the whole part of my left ear too,” he said at the beginning of his testimony about the episode he experienced while leaving the radio.
Román explained that the attack was completely surprising, that there was no prior exchange with the aggressor and assured that he was unable to identify the attacker. “Obviously I don’t know who he is,” he said, explaining that the aggressor escaped immediately after hitting him and that until now he was not recognized. The columnist also reflected on the possible motivations behind the attack and suggested that it could have been an episode of violence motivated by prejudice.
“I even wondered if they had hit me because I was wearing a pink shirt,” he said during the same story, where he also considered that expressions of discrimination linked to sexual orientation persist and assured: “The fact of being a troll is not over.” According to Román, at the Finocchieto Hospital, where the journalist was treated after the attack, the clinician informed him that “ten people are coming a month for this issue. They leave work and they hit him.”
During the radio interview, Román also referred to the social context in which the attack occurred and maintained that these episodes cannot be separated from the current political climate. “It was the day after the president spoke and said ‘I love taming them, I love seeing them suffer,’” he said when analyzing whether certain public speeches can contribute to generating an environment of greater hostility.
The journalist indicated that after the episode he made medical consultations and began to evaluate the legal steps to move forward with the complaint. Meanwhile, the aggressor remains unidentified and the case generated repercussions among colleagues, organizations and listeners of the station, who expressed their concern about the incident that occurred in broad daylight in a busy area of the city of Buenos Aires.
