Annika Larmi and his spouse, hockey goalie Emil Larmi, have received sad news. Annika Larmi tells about it in her Instagram update.
Both Annika and Emil Larmi carry the same genetic defect, which causes the child to have an illness if the child inherits the genetic defect from both parents.
It is a covertly inherited disease, i.e. symptoms do not appear if the person inherits the genetic defect only from one of their parents. The probability that a child will get a genetic defect from both parents is 25 percent.
Larmi says that the disease leads to death already during pregnancy.
– It is super rare that we both carry the same genetic defect. That’s why this seems unbelievable, but unfortunately it’s true, Larmi writes.
– Feeling confused, angry, sad, disbelieving… but relieved at the same time. Now we have information about what disease our babies have had and what caused it.
The Larms are currently waiting for a family addition. Annika Larmi writes that they have the opportunity for fetal diagnostics in the current pregnancy.
Larmi says that in the ultrasound examination performed at the 10th week of pregnancy, everything looked normal, but deviations often start to appear only in the later weeks. The new ultrasound examination is in a few weeks, when a placenta sample will also be taken from Larmi.
The placenta sample can be used to examine the chromosomes of the fetus and find out if the child has a genetic defect. There is a small risk of miscarriage associated with sampling.
The married couple has a 2.5-year-old daughter, but they have suffered from miscarriages after the birth of their first child. They lost two children within a year before these were born.
