Kenyan sport is causing a stir due to numerous doping offences. As the African country’s national anti-doping agency announced on Monday, a total of 27 athletes were provisionally suspended for corresponding violations.
Among them is Rita Jeptoo, a former winner of the prestigious marathons in Boston and Chicago. She was already banned for four years in 2014 for doping, and now banned anabolic androgenic steroids have been detected in a test.
National 400-meter hurdles champion Wiseman Were was also provisionally suspended after missing three tests since August 2025. However, their hearings are still pending. In addition to numerous track and field athletes, football and basketball players are also on the list of 27 temporarily suspended athletes. Since 2017, more than 140 Kenyan athletes, more than any other country, have been suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).
