Despite criticism of the club

Daniel Bauer remains coach of VfL Wolfsburg for the time being. This was decided by the sporting leadership of the Bundesliga club, which was in danger of relegation, the day after the 4-0 defeat at VfB Stuttgart. “We discussed and analyzed the overall situation intensively. We came to the conclusion that, together with Daniel Bauer and his coaching team, we were drawing the right conclusions in order to be successful against HSV,” said sports director Peter Christiansen, looking ahead to the next game against Hamburger SV on Saturday (3:30 p.m./Sky).

“We have complete confidence in the team and are convinced that they have the experience and quality to achieve the necessary results as quickly as possible. The sporting situation is serious, but not hopeless,” added Christiansen. The Danish sports director himself is heavily criticized. Because with the fifth most expensive squad in the league – the difference to the squad value is not smaller for any club – the Volkswagen club has fallen back to 17th place in the table.

Bauer criticizes structures at VfL Wolfsburg

Bauer himself criticized the development in Wolfsburg in clear terms when he said after the Stuttgart game: “The fact is that we have to change a lot of structures. The atmosphere and culture within the club are currently not suitable for the Bundesliga.”

Nevertheless, the 43-year-old has the chance to look after the team at least in the northern duel with HSV. This Monday he led the training. Before and after there were long discussions with sports director Christiansen, with sports director Pirmin Schwegler and with supervisory board chairman Sebastian Rudolph.

Bauer was also unlucky as head coach at VfL Wolfsburg

The long-time U19 coach Bauer initially took over as interim successor to the hapless Dutchman Paul Simonis at VfL in November and was promoted to head coach shortly before Christmas after seven points from four games. VfL has now been without a win for seven games, and in ten games as a long-term solution, the Wolves only picked up five points under Bauer.

After the Stuttgart game, the first coaching candidates who could replace Bauer were already traded. This also included Dieter Hecking, who won the DFB Cup with Wolfsburg in 2015 and most recently had to leave VfL Bochum early. Another ex-coach, 2009 champion coach Felix Magath, had previously been traded.
