The German biathlon mixed relay team missed out on their first medal at the home Junior World Championships. The victory on the Arber in the Bavarian Forest surprisingly went to Latvia on Monday (March 2nd, 2026).
With almost double-digit temperatures and correspondingly difficult snow conditions, the Latvian 4×6 kilometer relay surprisingly came out on top in 1:17:55.2 hours (0 penalties / 15 shooting errors) ahead of Norway (0 / 8 / +4.5 seconds). The French started the race as big favorites, but in the end had to settle for third place (0 / 10 / +58.7 seconds).
German mixed comes fifth
The German relay team around Korbi Kübler, Lukas Tannheimer, Leni Dietersberger and Sydney Wüstling missed out on the medals and came fifth thanks to a courageous final sprint from Sydney Wüstling (0 / 9 / +2:03.8 minutes). The wait for the first medals at the Junior World Championships in the Bavarian Forest continues even after the third junior competition. On Monday morning (March 2nd, 2026), the German youth mixed relay team also missed out on a medal. The quartet only came in ninth when Austria won.
DSV relay leaves too much on the track
The German hopes of winning their first World Cup medal at the competitions at the foot of the Großer Arber were quickly dashed. Although Korbi Kübler had taken over the top position as the starting runner, Germany fell behind after one error in prone and three in standing. With 53.1 seconds behind and only the twelfth best running time, he handed over to Lukas Tannheimer.
Julia Tannheimer’s younger brother initially made no mistakes, but then needed a spare while standing. Despite good running performance with the fourth best time on his lap, the gap increased to more than a minute.
Leni Dietersberger also made a mistake lying down, but remained flawless while standing. Her gap to the front increased due to her only ninth-best running time. So final runner Sydney Wüstling had to catch up for almost a minute and a half and she took over in sixth place.
17-year-old libertine gives hope
The 17-year-old was no longer able to do that. In return, she improved the German team result thanks to a faultless prone shooting and a penalty loop in the standing position that was just avoided. In the end, she crossed the finish line in fifth place with the sixth best running time. A performance that gives hope for the future.
