“The port of Zeebrugge – including the Fluxys gas terminal – is of strategic national importance for our economy and security,” says Pillen. “The port of Antwerp is of course a logical location for an anti-aircraft defense system, but by that logic so is Zeebrugge and its gas infrastructure.”
Pillen asks that, as soon as the first capacity is operational in Antwerp, the next battery is quickly stationed in Zeebrugge. “Belgium has purchased a total of nine such Norwegian systems. An optimal geographical distribution will be worked out. The Prime Minister has already announced that the first battery will go to Antwerp. Given the need to adequately protect the gas terminal in Zeebrugge, among other things, a rapid commitment of a battery for Zeebrugge is logical.”
