Unexpectedly, Borussia Dortmund is eliminated from the Champions League playoffs against Bergamo. This doesn’t just have sporting consequences.
Borussia Dortmund expects a double-digit million loss for the 2025/26 financial year. The Bundesliga club announced this after the Champions League exit against Bergamo. After the 2-0 win in the first leg, there was a surprising 1-4 defeat in Bergamo on Wednesday, which sealed the end of the premier class.
BVB’s statement states that Borussia Dortmund is changing its “published earnings forecast” after “the elimination from the play-offs of the UEFA Champions League.” Accordingly, BVB now has a deficit of between twelve and 22 million euros.
The board had previously considered a range between a profit of five million euros and minus five million euros to be possible.
The Dortmund team around sports director Sebastian Kehl had firmly planned for the round of 16 in the premier class. There would have been a bonus of eleven million euros for this. The club is now missing this amount. “To be honest, I didn’t think about the scenario before the game. This progression was planned, we had planned the income,” admitted Kehl: “We will continue on our path and draw our conclusions from it.”
However, not only Dortmund’s forecasts were adjusted to the elimination, the stock market also reacted to the bankruptcy of coach Niko Kovač’s team. On Thursday morning, the share value fell by 4.5 percent to just 3.17 euros per share.
