The idea of a Memorial Forest has been around for some time. Maja was inspired by a similar initiative in Dordrecht. “There had just been a tree planting day there and people were walking around. They were very happy.”
She contacted old contacts in municipal politics in Den Helder and received many enthusiastic responses for her idea to also realize this in Den Helder. Three years later the time has come and the first trees have already been planted. Ultimately, there will be about 180 trees. “Of course I’m proud,” Maja beams. “I think it’s wonderful that it worked out. I wouldn’t have dared to dream that.”
