In 2009, the then coach and managing director Felix Magath won the first and only championship in the club’s history with VfL Wolfsburg, and two years later he saved the club from relegation. The VfL supervisory board is now discussing bringing the 72-year-old back – as a coach.
As the NDR learned, Magath would be interested in joining the relegation-threatened table 15 this week or next. to get in. The club’s supervisory board has not yet taken a position on this. While some members could certainly imagine the coach’s commitment, there are apparently also skepticism among others – for example about whether Magath’s way of managing people and players is still up to date.
There could be an argument for a return campaign: Ex-professional Diego Benaglio has been on the supervisory board since last year; he was brought in to increase sporting competence. The former goalkeeper became champion with Magath in 2009.
Managing director Peter Christiansen expressed his confidence in coach Daniel Bauer at the weekend after the 2-3 defeat against Augsburg. The supervisory board had given the signal to continue with Christiansen – but there is said to be no agreement on this within the control committee.
If Magath comes, it will likely mean both the departure of the managing director and the end of Bauer’s tenure as a professional coach. There is apparently discussion about signing Magath as a “firefighter” until the end of the season; a long-term contract would be out of the question. Felix Magath was last on the sidelines almost four years ago when he saved Hertha BSC from relegation. Since 2025 he has been the sports director of his home club Viktoria Aschaffenburg in the Bavarian Regional League.
