New music after a long break: Massive Attack announce songs for 2026

At the end of 2025, Massive Attack caused a stir on social media: via their official channels, the British trip-hop formation announced that they would release several new songs during the year – their first new material in years. The tracks will be released physically and digitally via a new label. But: Spotify is expressly excluded from publication. A clear message to the streaming industry.

Politically engaged

Massive Attack are one of the most politically active acts in the British music scene. Del Naja is an avowed supporter of the Palestinian civilian population and has repeatedly spoken out publicly about the Middle East war – which regularly brought the duo criticism, but also broad solidarity. As early as 2023 and 2024, they and other artists called for a ceasefire and also discussed this on stage. In addition, they have been committed to the area of climate justice for years: in collaboration with the Tyndall research group, they published the highly regarded report “Music Declares Emergency” in 2021, which analyzes the music industry’s carbon footprint and calls for concrete reduction targets.

Who is behind it?

Massive Attack were formed in Bristol in 1988 and consist of Robert “3D” Del Naja and Grant “Daddy G” Marshall. Both come from the Wild Bunch, a loose collective of DJs, graffiti artists and musicians that shaped the Bristol club scene of the 1980s. Del Naja, a trained graffiti artist and visual artist, is considered the creative and political face of the band; He is jointly responsible for the striking visuals of the live shows and regularly appears as a solo artist under the name “3D”. Marshall, on the other hand, represents the musical continuity of the project and was temporarily less active in the past – but always returned.

The work: From “Blue Lines” to “Heligoland”

With their debut album “Blue Lines” (1991), Massive Attack, together with Portishead and Tricky, de facto invented a new genre: trip-hop. The combination of dark samples, dub influences, soul and electronic beats created a sound that still resonates today. Albums such as “Protection” (1994), “Mezzanine” (1998) – which includes her best-known song “Teardrop” – and “100th Window” (2003) are among the most influential works in British pop history. “Heligoland” was last published in 2010; Since then, the duo has remained silent when it comes to studio albums. Instead, they experimented with short formats, the soundtrack to the film “Hummingbird” (2013) and the EP “Ritual Spirit” (2016), which featured Young Fathers and Tricky, among others.
