A short video that began circulating on social networks last Thursday focused on a detail that had gone unnoticed in the midst of diplomatic protocol: the repetitive movements made by the president Javier Milei with their hands during the official group photo (“family photo”) of the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace, the new organization promoted by donald trump.
In the clip—just a few seconds long—Milei is seen standing alongside other international leaders, such as Viktor Orban, Prabowo Subianto and Gianni Infantinowhile waiting for the moment of photography. Without the folder that usually accompanies him at public events and without the close presence of his sister Karina Milei, the president makes circular movements with one of his hands, as if adjusting something imperceptible. The gesture is repeated several times and was quickly interpreted on networks as a sign of discomfort or tension.
The images began to go viral on February 20, one day after the event held on the 19th in Washington DC. From then on, the video was replicated by different political accounts, especially opposition ones, with ironic comments and speculation about the President’s behavior.
The Peace Board had its launch on February 19 at the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace. In this framework, Trump announced a commitment to US financing of 10 billion dollarsin addition to additional contributions estimated between 7,000 and 9,000 million for the reconstruction of Gaza after the conflict between Israel and Hamas. The plan contemplates, among other points, a stabilization force and an international technical committee. Milei was one of the few presidents who attended in person and, during his two-minute speech, offered the collaboration of the Argentine White Helmets. “Argentina is ready to contribute,” he stated.
The Government relativized the controversy generated on networks. They pointed out that it is usual gestures of the president in public situations and attributed the movements to the fatigue typical of an international trip and exposure in front of the cameras. In opposition sectors, on the other hand, they interpreted the scene as a sign of tension in a high-visibility diplomatic scenario.
The video continues to circulate on Instagram, Facebook and Threads, where it accumulates comments and conflicting readings. The episode confirms, once again, the speed with which a gestural detail can become an object of political debate in contemporary Argentina.
