On the 13th day, some German teams made their last appearance at the 2026 Olympic Games, while for others the competition was just beginning. The opportunity evaluation at a glance.

No rain of medals was expected for Germany today, but the Nordic combined athletes had rightly thought they still had a chance of winning a medal in the morning. Surprisingly, a newcomer narrowly missed out on third place. And the German speed skating shooting star Finn Sonnekalb wanted to get started in the afternoon.

9:05 a.m. – Curling: Germany – China Men

The last game in the group phase against China no longer had any meaning for the German team. After losing two games against the Czech Republic and Switzerland, the curlers were already eliminated early. Today they said goodbye to the Olympics with a 6:4 win against the Chinese, who were also eliminated early.

In the end, four wins and five defeats are the results for the German European champions of 2024, who actually wanted to be among the four best teams. But for the youngest team in the competition, participation in the Olympic Games remains a success. The last time Germany had a curling team was twelve years ago.

9:50 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. – Ski mountaineering: Sprint women and men

For the first time, ski mountaineering is part of the program at the Winter Olympics. The sprint race consists of a climb, a stretch and a descent. Tatjana Paller, Helena Euringer and Finn Hoesch started for Germany today in thick snow. The 19-year-old Euringer from Bad Reichenhall and the 23-year-old Hoesch from Starnberg were eliminated in their heats in the morning. Hoesch mainly failed because of the changes, the skis wouldn’t come together and he took too long to attach them to his backpack.

In ski mountaineering, athletes first zigzag up a mountain with skins under their skis. This is followed by a flight of stairs for which you have to take off your skis and attach them to your backpack. After the passage, they put their skis on again to master another ascent on skis. Once at the top, they take off their skins and ski down the final descent to the finish. A round lasts between three and four minutes and climbs over 70 meters. What is required is technique, endurance, strength and a good strategy that uses all of this appropriately.

10 a.m. and 2 p.m. – Nordic combination: team sprint
