For the oldest coach in the Bundesliga, a home win with Mainz 05 against Hamburg in the relegation battle counts for more than his birthday.
Urs Fischer puts his special day of honor aside for the time being for the job. “It’s not that important to me. For me it’s more about the game tomorrow, that has more meaning for me,” said the coach, who wants to take the next step towards staying in the Bundesliga on his 60th birthday.
Celebrating will be difficult for Fischer
In the birthday home game, the Swiss host FSV Mainz 05 and Hamburger SV (Friday, 8:30 p.m.). Even if he is successful, there will hardly be any big celebrations with his loved ones.
“It will be difficult to celebrate,” said Fischer, “I’ll get out of there sometime around midnight, drive over to the training ground and the analysis for Saturday morning should then be prepared.”
Fischer knows football on big birthdays
However, Fischer already knows such an experience for his birthday, as he revealed. “I spent my 50th birthday in the hotel before a game with FC Basel,” he said: “So with football – the same goes for my 60th birthday.” After all, “part of the family” was there on Friday. “We have a lot to do. But I think that we can at least get a toast,” said Fischer.
His team could probably give him the best present: if they beat the in-form HSV, Mainz (21 points) would initially move five points away from Werder Bremen in relegation place 16.
