Iltalehti breaks down the hottest topics of the Olympics every day. Here are the Afterbaths for Wednesday, February 18.
Russian-born couple for medals
Santtu Silvennoinen, Val di Fiemme
Georgia won the first medal in its history at the Winter Olympics when Anastasia Metelkina and Luka Berulava took silver in figure skating pair skating.
– This is a big step forward for figure skating in Georgia, so that small children start skating. We already have sufficient conditions, Berulava said at the press conference.
He is a person born in Moscow in November 2002.
– I was born in Moscow because my family had to leave Georgia during the war. We always spoke Georgia at home. It’s my mother tongue, the skater has commented before.
Metelkina also has a background from Russia, as she was born in the city of Vladimir in 2005 and represented Russia until 2020.
– Taking into account that these are our first Olympics and only our third skating season together, silver is undoubtedly a great result, Metelkina said at an international press conference.
Georgia became independent from the Soviet Union in April 1991. In the Summer Olympics, the country has achieved great success since 1996, with as many as 47 medals. Judo, wrestling and weightlifting are Georgians’ main sports.

Pennase does not have a chainsaw
Lassi Kuisma, Milan
Currently coaching JYP in the ice hockey SM league Petri Matikainen has told that he once turned on a chainsaw in a game meeting and told his player to come and try how it feels.
The goal was to communicate that this is how Matikainen wants his team to play.
Lions head coach Antti Pennanen would seem to be a completely different country.
After the dramatic win over Switzerland, Pennase was asked if certain players in the locker room took on a role during the break.
– Well, I haven’t been to hear. But we have great leading players who will certainly make sure the faith is kept. It’s great, Pennanen said.
It strongly seems that Pennanen has left at least this aspect of coaching to the players.
Mikko Rantanen said that during the second period the coaching came to speak.
– But we have a lot of experienced players. We talked among the players that faith must not end, until the very last second.

Shameful Sweden
Viljami Kalmari, Val di Fiemme
When the Swedish men’s ski team was left in jumbo place in the relay on Sunday, the bottom should have already been reached. They gathered in the western neighbor Expressen’s to the crisis meeting.
However, the meeting did not improve Sweden’s results. In Wednesday’s pair relay, Johan Häggström and Edvin Anger fell to 10th place.
The Milan-Cortina Olympics have been a total disaster for Swedish skiers. The team’s best ranking is by Truls Gisselman seventh place in the 10+10 kilometer combined race.
At the same time, the blue and yellow women’s team has cleaned the table of medals. The gold train derailed only in the message that became silver.
Aftonbladet according to the Swedish men’s national team is on its way to its worst Olympics in 50 years. The course can only be corrected in Saturday’s 50 km traditional race, where all eyes will be on William Poromaha.

Gold on the wing
France was the overwhelming favorite in the women’s biathlon relay.
There were clear choices for the team Lou Jeanmonnot, Oceane Michelon and Julia Simonwho had already all won Olympic medals from Anterselva.
For the opening part, this season’s excellent shooter was caught Camille Bened. The Beijing Olympic gold medalist was also left out Justine Braisaz-Bouchetwho won the world championship in the sprint and relay last year.
However, Benedi’s sieve was completely missing in the post in the vertical position. He couldn’t get the boards down even with three spare cartridges, had one penalty round and brought France to the exchange in 16th place – almost a minute behind the top.
This was not felt anywhere when the other members of the team got on the track. Jeanmonnot already put France within a few seconds of the lead, Michelon took a 46.9 second lead and Simon secured the win.
Bened won Olympic gold on the wing, and it felt good.
– I didn’t succeed as I would have liked, but my teammates were so strong that it was a golden ending. Wow, this is crazy. I’m really happy, Bened said after the race.
