At the beginning of the evening, Mayor Jan Seton (CDA) opened the meeting with the announcement that Hooiveld was absent. He then went into the discussion following the commotion last Thursday. “We’ve been through quite a bit with each other in the past week. Politics has to do with people. It is part and parcel of the fact that emotions run high in this phase, but deceased councilors were still involved in the public debate. That opens up old wounds. Politics remains people work, but we take each other’s feelings into account. We want to cherish that culture in Borger-Odoorn,” said Seton. The mayor was referring to this publication in the Dagblad van het Noorden, in which the late Henk Bolk (former councilor of Municipal Interests) was quoted.
