Francis van Broekhuizen does not like that she has been ridiculed in Today Inside for her poor TV performances during Christmas. “That criticism was wrong, because it was not false at all.”
Most people missed it, but NPO 1 broadcast a new The Passion-like event around Christmas, namely The Nativity Scene of the Netherlands. The Biblical Christmas story came ‘to life in a heart-warming way’, live from Maastricht. Francis van Broekhuizen was also present, namely as an innkeeper. An off-key innkeeper.
To poop
An evening later a fragment of it was shown in Today Inside and what a sound Francis came out of it. It’s like kicking a cat on the tail. René Froger’s hit ‘Everything can make a person happy’ has never sounded so bad. TV authority Tina Nijkamp simply burst out laughing during that broadcast, she thought it was so absurd.
How does Francis look back on it? “That criticism was wrong, because it was not false. Everything was good, but it is not my genre. And when people are shocked that I sing René Froger… I don’t think Tina Nijkamp is an expert on singing, what does she know about singing? Anyway, they always like to make fun of me at VI, I know that.”
Always whining
Francis shrugs it off, she says in the Weekend. “I don’t really care about it. They think I’m strange. But yes, they always want to complain. Look, there is only commotion when someone suddenly says something that is outside of expectations. So she now said something that caused a stir, but it made no sense.”
She continues: “I sent Tina a message saying: ‘Hey, you didn’t listen carefully, because it wasn’t out of tune!’ And I don’t give a shit about the rest. Because I know it’s right.”
Harassment
Um, can’t Francis just admit that it sounded awful? Can she criticize? “Yes, if it is criticism that is correct, I will accept it. But not what is incorrect, because then I think it is just bullying and I no longer respond to it.”
Did she even see it again? “No, because I knew it was good. I had watched it that evening. I was in Groningen and thought: how nice it turned out! So I actually thought it was very strange how people responded to it. Okay, someone may find the song sung ugly, that’s okay. But it wasn’t out of tune.”
