Coming in summer

Liverpool FC looked ahead to the 2026/27 season on Deadline Day. French defensive talent Jérémy Jacquet is moving from Stade Rennes to Anfield in the summer. The Reds will pay the French a base fee of 63.6 million euros, which can rise to 69.4 million euros with bonus payments.

Liverpool, who beat Chelsea in the race for the 20-year-old, makes Jacquet the fourth most expensive defender under the age of 20. In first place is Matthijs de Ligt, who moved from Ajax Amsterdam to Juventus Turin for 85.5 million euros in 2019/20. Behind them are Dean Huijsen (62.5 million, Real Madrid) and Leny Yoro (62 million, Man United). Liverpool only paid more money for a defender once: in 2017/18, Virgil van Dijk came from Southampton FC for 84.7 million euros.

Jacquet was trained in Stade Rennes’ youth ranks and has become a regular at the sixth-place team this season. He played 18 of a possible 20 games in Ligue 1 and only missed his only minutes due to suspensions or sending offs. Since the summer, its market value has doubled from 10 million to 20 million euros. At Rennes, Jacquet replaces Jérémy Doku as a record departure, who moved to Manchester City for 60 million euros in 2023/24. This makes him more expensive than Désiré Doué, for whom PSG paid 50 million euros in the summer of 2024.

At the Reds, Jacquet could be an anticipation of a departure for Ibrahima Konaté, whose contract ends in the summer. What will happen next for the former Leipzig player is uncertain. Liverpool had also looked at signing Marc Guéhi from Crystal Palace, whose contract would also have ended in the summer, but Manchester City brought in the England international in the winter.
