Justus Fischer blocks a throw from Ivan Martinovic

As of: January 30, 2026 9:04 p.m

The German handball players are in the European Championship final after the 31:28 win against Croatia – also thanks to outstanding defensive sequences from Justus Fischer. He was looking for an explanation himself.

Three blocked throws in 65 seconds: When the German handball players celebrated their entry into the final, defensive monster Justus Fischer was even celebrated by the national coach. “He blocked three balls in one attack. That’s extraordinary,” praised Alfred Gislason. For goalkeeper Andreas Wolff, the triple action in a short space of time was simply “outstanding and record-breaking”.

Fischer – “One of my best games”

Fischer himself had no explanation for his three blocks in a Croatian attack in the second half. “I have no idea how it worked, but it worked. I’m happy about that. We defended ourselves in a little flow,” said the pivot from Bundesliga club TSV Hannover-Burgdorf and added: “It all came together. That was one of my best games.”

With another block each from Juri Knorr and Johannes Golla, Germany even managed five blocks in five minutes. It was the decisive 7:1 run in which the DHB selection pulled away from 17:16 (32nd) to 24:17 (40th). The absence of Germany’s previous block leader, Tom Kiesler (nine blocks in the tournament), was hardly noticeable.
