After the triumph over France, the DHB team is dreaming of their first European Championship medal since 2016. But Croatia is waiting. t-online explains where you can watch the duel.
Germany’s handball players are only one win away from the European Championship final. In the fight for the final, national coach Alfred Gíslason’s selection will face feared opponents Croatia this Friday. At the beginning of January, the DHB team celebrated two test match victories against the team of former national coach Dagur Sigurdsson. Andreas Wolff and Co. have been waiting for a competitive win in a direct duel since 2019.
After the win against defending champions France, Germany is considered the slight favorite. The Olympic silver medalist is hoping for his first European Championship medal since the 2016 title. In the second semi-final (from 8.30 p.m. in the t-online live ticker) the top favorites Denmark and Iceland face each other.
Before the game, Croatia’s Sigurdsson mercilessly settled accounts with the European Handball Federation (EHF) European Championship organizers in an unprecedented angry speech. “I have to take part in this circus. It’s a disgrace. The EHF is not interested in us players or in the team,” complained the coach.
In his tirade, the former national coach referred to the packed tournament schedule for his team. Unlike Germany, Croatia played its main round games in Malmö, Sweden and recently had to play two days in a row. On the non-playing Thursday, Croatia had a day of travel to Herning, where the finals will be played – and where Germany has been playing since the start of the tournament.
National coach Gíslason agreed with his compatriot. “He’s absolutely right and I’m sorry,” said the 66-year-old. Will the travel strains have an impact on the semi-final game between Germany and Croatia?
The duel between Germany and Croatia will be broadcast by ARD. Kickoff is at 5:45 p.m. The preliminary reporting starts at 5:15 p.m. Moderator Alex Schlüter and expert Dominik Klein are in action, with Florian Naß and co-commentator Johannes Bitter commenting.
