Belgian professional cyclist Laurenz Rex will be out for several weeks after a serious crash at high speed at the AlUla Tour in Saudi Arabia.
The Soudal-Quickstep team announced this on Friday. Rex suffered fractures to three spinous processes on his spine on the third stage.
Rex is in a stable condition, but needs several weeks of rest before his rehabilitation begins, the Belgian team said.
The 26-year-old only switched from the Intermarche-Wanty racing team to Quickstep this season. The crash occurred on the descent around twelve kilometers from the finish on Bir Jaydah Mountain. In addition to Rex, Fabien Grellier (France) and Davide Stella (Italy) also fell.
The fall is said to have occurred at around 100 km/h. Grellier and Stella immediately gave up the race, Rex fought his way to the finish despite his injuries.
