The Government of the City of Buenos Aires announced the sending of a project to the Buenos Aires Legislature so that car license plates do not register increases above inflation. The initiative aims to correct distortions detected in the calculation of the automobile tax and to avoid increases that exceed the taxpayers’ ability to pay.
As explained by the Buenos Aires administration, the scheme contemplates an update of the tax valuations and rates, but incorporates a compensation mechanism which guarantees that the final amount to be paid does not exceed the inflation rate. In this way, the aim is to ensure that no vehicle owner pays real increases in economic terms.
The measure arises after complaints were registered in recent months for bills with significant increases, as a result of changes in the tax values of some models. The City Government recognized that the update process generated unequal situations and pointed out that the new project aims to organize the system and make it more equitable.
The text sent to the Legislature also seeks to provide predictability for the 2025 fiscal year, establishing clear rules for updating the automobile tax and avoiding sudden jumps that impact the family economy. In this sense, they highlighted that the objective is not to freeze the taxbut align it with the general evolution of prices.
If the initiative is approved, the patent tax in the City will be tied to inflationconsolidating a moderate adjustment scheme that, according to the Buenos Aires Executive, will allow collection to be sustained without transferring excessive increases to taxpayers.
