German coach Thomas Letsch and former DFB junior Frans Krätzig missed a surprise win in the Europa League with RB Salzburg.
Austria’s national leaders lost 2:3 (1:0) at Aston Villa on the last matchday of the league phase after a 2-0 lead – although ultimately even a success in Birmingham would not have been enough to make it into the top 24. Villa had already qualified directly for the round of 16.
U21 national player Bright Arrey-Mbi and Sporting Braga also made it into the top eight teams and thus directly into the round of the last 16 after a 0-0 draw with the Go Ahead Eagles.
In the playoffs for the round of 16, however, coach Domenico Tedesco and Fenerbahce Istanbul continue after a 1-1 (1-0) draw at FCSB Bucharest. Goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther, who lost 1:2 (0:2) at Betis Sevilla with Feyenoord Rotterdam, is completely out.
For the Glasgow Rangers and their German coach Danny Röhl there was nothing to gain from the 1:3 (1:0) win against former European Cup winners FC Porto.
However, unlike their city rivals Celtic, the Rangers no longer had a chance of progressing – they made it into the playoffs with a 4:2 (3:0) win at FC Utrecht.
