Harry Styles has explained the meaning of the album title “Kiss All the Time. Disco Occasionally.” In an interview Regarding the record, which was released in March, Styles said that the balanced emphasis on desire and routine was important to him.
“Kiss All the Time. Disco Occasionally”: “You could say it’s like ‘drink water all the time. But you have to pee occasionally’,” Styles said on BBC Radio 1’s breakfast show with Greg James. “You can take a break from kissing. But you can also drink water while you pee. It’s kind of optional. The idea is that you can take a break from kissing to go to the disco.” For him, kissing is a vital activity, occasionally replaced by partying in the club.
In another conversation with the British broadcaster, Harry Styles also spoke about a tourist visit to Rome last year, which coincided with the papal election. At the hairdresser he got the full dose of Italian joy.
LCD Soundsystem and The Durutti Column as influences
“I was at the hairdresser in Rome when all of a sudden I heard everyone shout “Habemus Papam!” [„Wir haben einen Papst“] shouting and people running down the street,” Styles says. “The barber also shouted ‘Habemus Papam!’ It was totally crazy.”
Harry Styles also talked about new musical influences. His new single “Aperture” is influenced by “classic pop songwriting,” but he cited LCD Soundsystem and English post-punk band The Durutti Column as other sources of inspiration.
“I have [LCD Soundsystem] Seen at a festival in Madrid and then again in Brixton [Academy, London]. It was so beautiful to see them get lost in it. The inspiration, [LCD Soundsystem] seeing and realizing ‘this is how I want to feel on stage’ fit the music I was making.”
