Nick Cave, Ejae and Raphael Saadiq – they all have the opportunity to win a golden boy for “best song” (Music: Original Song) at the upcoming Oscars (March 15, 2026, in our case on March 16 on Monday night). The nominations were announced in Hollywood on Thursday (January 22), with a surprising record.
Those mentioned will probably have little chance against “Golden” from “KPop Demon Hunters”. But that’s another story.
What’s exciting, however, is who will definitely NOT get an Oscar for Best Song this year. There were some superstars of the music scene on the shortlist published weeks ago of who could be selected for the renowned category.
Ed Sheeran and Billy Idol without a nomination
Included were Nine Inch Nails (“As Alive As You Need Me To Be” for “Tron: Ares”), Ed Sheeran, Dave Grohl and John Mayer (“Drive” for “F1”) and Billy Idol (“Dying To Live” from “Billy Idol: Dying to Live”). They are now all left empty-handed. NIN’s Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross will be able to handle it, having already won twice at the Oscars with their soundtracks for “The Social Network” and “Soul.”
However, the nomination for Dianne Warren is likely to cause a certain amount of tension. The songwriter and composer is also nominated for an Oscar for her piece “Dear Me” (sung by Kesha). It comes from, of all things, a documentary about her life: “Diane Warren: Relentless.”
Ironically, the 69-year-old has already been nominated for an Academy Award 17 times (!), but never received it once. After all, there was an Oscar for her life’s work in 2022. Her unsuccessfully nominated hits include “Because You Loved Me” by Céline Dion (from “Up Close”) and “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith (from “Armageddon”). More than 70 of her songs can be heard in films and series.
