- Hertha’s fan support reports excessive commitment
Before Hertha BSC’s game against Schalke 04 in the 2nd Bundesliga, there was a major police operation in which several supporters and officers were injured. Hertha BSC confirmed an incident and the background was still being investigated.
The Hertha BSC fan association, a solidarity community of ultra groups in the Ostkurve, spoke on “X” of an excessive commitment and numerous, “some even seriously injured” fans. The Berlin police strongly contradicted this. When asked by rbb|24, a spokesman said there had been serious attacks on emergency services. Barriers were thrown and police officers were attacked with striking tools.
Pepper spray use and injured
According to police, the emergency services used pepper spray. In total there were 21 injured officers and 31 injured fans. These were respiratory and eye irritations. According to the police, there were no seriously injured fans according to initial findings in the evening.
According to the spokesman, at least three people were arrested on suspicion of insult, grievous bodily harm and suspicion of a particularly serious breach of the peace, among other things.
Schalke fans show solidarity
Dozens of fans from the Berlin ultra groups left the stadium shortly after the game kicked off in protest against what they saw as the disproportionate police deployment. The Schalke supporters expressed their solidarity and forewent organized support for their team. So there were no choreographed chants and flags in the Gelsenkirchen block. The Ruhr area club was accompanied to Berlin by around 20,000 fans.
Before the game, the Hertha BSC fan association had complained in a press release about, in its opinion, disproportionate house searches a few days ago on supporters of the capital club. It is unclear whether these searches are related to the operation and confrontation on Saturday.
