Burda Media is undergoing significant changes under the leadership of Elisabeth Varn, who recently took over as CEO following the departure of Jan Wachtel. With an emphasis on adapting to a media landscape increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence, Varn is stepping into a role that demands both innovation and strategic restructuring.
A Comprehensive Transformation
In a recent press release, Burda Media announced plans for a “comprehensive transformation” aimed at becoming “slimmer, more agile, and more capable” over the next 12 to 18 months. This restructuring will affect not only German publishing operations but also international subsidiaries and support functions. By integrating various business units, Burda aims to streamline its operations and enhance effectiveness.
Integrating Business Units
Under Varn’s leadership, Burda Media will merge BurdaVerlag and BurdaForward. The goal is to create an integrated media house where brands are managed holistically, silos are dismantled, and competencies are consolidated. Key brand categories will include “Focus,” “Lifestyle,” “Women & Entertainment,” and “Screens.” For instance, the “Focus” category will combine the magazine, online platforms, and “Focus Plus,” while “Bunte,” along with its online platform “Bunte.de,” will fall under the Lifestyle umbrella alongside well-known brands like “Instyle” and “Freundin.”
“Women & Entertainment” will encompass all weekly publications and women’s magazines, including “Superillu” and “Guter Rat,” whereas “Screens” will integrate programming publications such as “Cinema” and “TV Spielfilm.”
New Leadership Roles
As part of the organizational changes, several key leadership positions are either newly created or consolidated. Notably, Stefan Ottlitz, formerly with “Spiegel,” will assume the role of Chief Digital Officer and oversee the “Focus” brand. Manuela Kampp-Wirtz will manage the Lifestyle sector, while Sven Dams, as Chief Product Officer, will oversee the production of print products across multiple brand categories including “Woman & Entertainment,” “Screens,” and more. Meanwhile, Rebecca Gottwald will serve as Chief AI Officer to maximize the potential of artificial intelligence in the company’s operations.
Wiebke Meeder will transition from Handelsblatt Media Group to become Chief Revenue Officer, and Florian Buck will take on the CFO role, overseeing all finance functions at Burda Media.
Focus on Clarity and Collaboration
The restructuring also involves the departure of several key personnel, including Daniel Steil from BurdaForward and Martin Weese, who was the Chief Digital Officer of BurdaVerlag. Elisabeth Varn and her new leadership team will focus on collaboration and clarity, emphasizing the necessity of aligning support functions more closely with operational needs.
Varn stated, “We are aligning Burda Media according to the abilities that will make a difference in the future.” The goal is to establish a strong foundation for long-term economic stability while fostering room for innovation and sustainable growth.
Revamping International Operations
Additionally, Burda Media aims to revitalize its international media activities. A stronger emphasis will be placed on entrepreneurial responsibility in individual countries, promoting local development and market-oriented decision-making. As part of this initiative, Burda International Holding will cease its cross-border strategic and operational activities and will be transitioned into a financial holding, under the sole management of Marie Stephan.
The transformation at Burda Media is a bold move designed to position the company optimally for the future of media. By integrating various sectors, introducing new leadership dynamics, and focusing on essential competencies, Burda aims to navigate the challenges posed by an ever-evolving industry landscape.
