Three DFB stars meet: FC Bayern dismantles Leipzig

FC Bayern remains the measure of all things in the Bundesliga. The Munich team also scored three points against RB Leipzig – despite being behind at halftime.
FC Bayern is taking big steps towards its 35th championship in the Bundesliga. The Munich team won 5-1 (0-1) at the start of the second half of the season at RB Leipzig on Saturday evening and thus restored the old gap of eleven points to their first pursuer Borussia Dortmund. BVB beat FC St. Pauli 3-2 in the afternoon.
Leipzig was the better team in the first half and deservedly took the lead through Rômulo (21st). But Bayern turned things up in the second half. First, DFB star Serge Gnabry equalized (50th), then Harry Kane turned the game in favor of the leaders (67th). With Jonathan Tah (83rd) and Aleksandar Pavlović (85th), two other German national players further increased the result.
The final point was scored by Michael Olise, who scored on an assist from Jamal Musiala (88th). The 22-year-old had recently come on as a substitute and was on the field in a competitive game for the first time since breaking his fibula at the Club World Cup.
Leipzig put Bavaria under enormous pressure. There shouldn’t be a 0:6 like in the first leg this Saturday evening. With a bit of luck, Leipzig could have scored three goals after ten minutes alone. But Christoph Baumgartner’s shot (3′) flew just over, Rômulo (5′) was denied by Neuer from a few meters, and Antonio Nusa (7′) pushed the ball past the empty goal.
Then Bayern entered the game. Luis Díaz’s long-range shot (11th) was too central and therefore too harmless. After sprinting across half the pitch, Lennart Karl (14th) apparently lacked the strength to precisely serve the completely free-standing Diaz in the penalty area.
Leipzig continued to set an enormous pace – and was rewarded. David Raum started steeply down the left into the Bayern penalty area, crossed and Rômulo was quicker on the ball than Jonathan Tah. Towards the end of a fast-paced 30 minutes, Nusa (24′) had the Saxons’ second goal in sight, but shot over the goal. Shortly before half-time, RB goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi (39th) prevented the equalizer on the other side with a daring save against Kane, who was ready to finish.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany reacted and brought on the recently injured Joshua Kimmich for Leon Goretzka after the half-time break. Bayern struck immediately. Baumgartner improperly accepted a pass in midfield, Dayot Upamecano won the ball and passed it directly to Gnabry. The 30-year-old finished dry into the far corner.
