Last year’s Champions League final took place in Munich. And it looks like a final in two years is becoming increasingly likely.

According to t-online information, FC Bayern can have legitimate hopes for the next “final at home” in the Champions League. After the final last summer, in which Paris Saint-Germain was crowned champion in the Munich Arena, the final of the premier class could return to the Bavarian capital as early as 2028.

Bayern’s CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen recently confirmed this in a major t-online interview. “The city of Munich must submit an official application to Uefa by June 2026. In September 2026, the Uefa Executive Committee will make a decision as to where the final will take place,” said Dreesen. “We’re obviously trying to do that, that’s clear.” Dreesen also made people sit up and take notice with the following sentence: “We are currently the only applicant.”

Doesn’t anyone else apart from Munich really want to host the Champions League final in their stadium? t-online now found out exciting background information about why this is so. Many other potential applicants are put off by the high demands that UEFA places on host cities and stadiums.

UEFA has precise ideas that affect, among other things, the infrastructure around the stadium, for example in terms of arrival and departure options and the number of parking spaces available. The requirements are also very high in the hospitality sector. There are expected to be a certain number of boxes in the stadium in order to be able to receive a corresponding number of guests. For these reasons, among others, not too many stadiums in Europe are currently eligible for the Champions League final.

None of this represents an insurmountable hurdle for the Munich Arena, as Dreesen emphasized again: “With the Allianz Arena we have the perfect infrastructure for such a big final, UEFA also knows that.”

If Munich actually gets the contract for 2028, it would pay off not only for reasons of prestige, but also financially for the record champions. According to t-online information, Bayern could once again expect a high seven-figure amount of income by renting their arena to UEFA, similar to 2025.
