The DHB team is worried about backcourt player Nils Lichtlein before the first group game on Thursday. The 23-year-old injured his foot during training.
There was nothing outwardly visible about the Füchse Berlin middleman when the German national handball team arrived in Denmark. Nils Lichtlein, like all the players in the DHB team, went relaxed to the team hotel in Silkeborg on Tuesday afternoon. “He was slightly injured in training,” said national team manager Benjamin Chatton. “It could be that he will be fit again in two days, maybe it will take four or five.”
Lichtlein injured on his left foot
Lichtlein could miss the Germans’ opening game on Thursday against Austria (8.30 p.m., live on Erste and on sportschau.de) in Herning. The injured left foot was examined on Tuesday morning before departure. “After the examination, it was clear to us that he was traveling to Denmark.”said Chatton, which meant that he should join the team as soon as possible. Lichtlein is planned as a substitute for playmaker Juri Knorr.
National coach Alfred Gislason has to remove two of the 18 players from his squad before each match day. If players get injured in the tournament, the 66-year-old can nominate players from the 35-man squad that was deposited with the European Handball Association EHF before the European Championships. However, given the severity of Lichtlein’s injury, this is not planned for the time being.
